A Year of Civic Repentance

Devotions and Shews

John Adams prophesied that we would and should commemorate American Independence “as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty.” He prescribed all our other solemnities and frivolities, too, including “Pomp and Parade, Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations.” The Devotions to God Almighty are the most important elements, of course, followed by the Shews, especially the recitations of the self-evident truths by and under which we became Americans, and of the faith and deeds of free men. Regrettably, the Devotions and Shews are just the elements that we’re most likely to neglect today.

Well, then, let’s repent!

Mark your calendar, and join us for Devotions and Shews on each of the occasions below. And keep an eye on this page for the possible addition of additional rendezvous with Liberty and Liberty’s God.
